Contact is the biggest calculation load in RecurDyn simulation.

It inevitably takes a long time to perform a simulation of a model with a lot of contacts.


Tips to speed up contact analysis

Here are some tips for speeding up the simulation that many people aren't aware of yet.

Use Surface Contact, Not Solid Contact.


Most RecurDyn users utilize Geo Surface Contact.

When defining the contact, you may select the bodies by clicking on them.

Then, the contact between Body1 and Body2 is defined.


However, if contact occurs only on a specific surface between two bodies, try to define contact on the specific surface (Surface) instead of the entire body (Solid). The simulation time can be greatly reduced (In some cases, it is 2-3 times faster, and in many cases, it is several tens of times faster).


The simulation speed can be much faster if you define the contact between the two surfaces by specifying only the specific surface of the upper part of the orange body and the lower surface of the box as shown in the following figure.

Option

To do so, when defining a Geo Surface Contact, you must select the option shown in the figure below.

By default, you are able to select multiple 'Surfaces' on the body.

In some cases, you may need to enter the Body Edit Mode and create a separate surface for contact to occur.

Note that the surface on which the contact will occur must be predicted correctly.

Often times it is obvious where the contact surface will be, but there are times when it cannot be predicted in advance.

In this case, the recommended method is to check the surface where the contact occurs using solid contact and then specify the contact for the corresponding surface.
