The hydraulic auto tensioner consists of following bodies:

     Cylinder

     Plunger

     Check ball.

 

The spring and damping force of the plunger relative to the cylinder balance the cylinder and check ball.

     The spring force is built up by the spring preload and the spring rate multiplied by the spring displacement.

     The damping force is a friction force and a hydraulic force that is proportional to the relative velocity of the plunger and cylinder.
